Abstract
Purpose : This study was 1st year of 4th examination of population based cohort study for hypertension genomic research. The purpose of the study was 1) to evaluate prognostic and risk factor, 2) to estimate prevalence and incidence of hypterension, and 3) changes of laboratory examinations through following study.

Methods : Of 2503 participants who had been involved in the 1st examination, 2487 subjects exclusive of 16 participants who died were scheduled to be visited. Totally 1604(64.5%) subjects have completed follow up examination, 720 subjects refused to participnate(impossible to contact :156 subjects, death: 7 subjects, etc: 557 subjects). Subjects of the follow up study conducted several examinations (blood pressure, various hyptension related risk factors and alboratory test)

Results : mean systolic and diastolic BPs in each examination period were 112.9-111.9-112.3-112.5(systolic, mmHg) ¹× 72.8-73.4-73.6-73.5(diastolic, mmHg) and there were no significant changes according to the examination period. However, prevalence of hypertension in each period was increased to 17.2, 19.8, 23.8 and 27.5%. Male was more prevalent than female. The incidence of hypertension for 6 years was totally 15.6%(male: 17.4%, female: 14.3%). As for the risk factors of the incidence, waist circumference in male, older age and family history of hypertension in female was most significant.

Conclusions : This study contributed to increase awareness, treatment and maintenance of hypertension. Actually awareness of hypertension in male was improved to 40% compared to that in 1st examination. more than 90% subjects in elderly was on treatment. This implies that the cohort study have positive effect on health care and diease prevention in Korean general adults
